St. David Church

I was commissioned to paint the historic Chapel in St. David which was demolished recently. This is the place I was baptized and where my wedding reception was held. Obviously I have many memories of walking these halls and driving up to the building.

When painting this meetinghouse, I wanted to capture its unique elements such as its setting right on the highway, its grand entry way, the surrounding mature trees, the Whetstone mountains in the background, the Mormon Battalion monument,  and especially the unique windows (round cultural hall windows, rectangular chapel windows, corner windows). My goal was to recreate the feeling of peace and joy of attending church on Sunday Mornings.

Initial Sketches

I actually like the energy and brushwork in my small initial sketches better than the final. So I’ll include those here as well.
